Rally for Vote-by-Mail Dropboxes in TORRANCE

September 11, 2020 @ 4:00 pm

From Andrea Sanchez:

hello,

Torrance For Justice (you can find us on instagram @TorranceForJustice and twitter @TorranceJustice) is holding our second rally against voter suppression this Friday at Hawthorne and Torrance Blvd.

At the city council meeting on 08/25/2020, Mike Griffiths, Aurelio Mattucci, Heidi Koch Ashcraft, George Chen, Sharon Kalani all agreed that the vote-by-mail dropboxes offered by the county (already paid by our city’s election fees) were a “blight” and “prone to vandalism”. they did not take into account that with the barriers to voting like the coronavirus pandemic and the recent attacks to USPS already are risking the people’s ability to vote. additionally, we are one of two cities that would not have these dropboxes, the other being Vernon, population 112. Torrance has 84,029 registered voters!

this would greatly affect the ability of working-class, people of color, and the elderly to submit their ballots. instead of prioritizing aesthetics, city council MUST maximize all voting options possible. also, there will not be any polling places on city property in Torrance.

thanks to concerned emails and calls to city council (09/01/2020), the city council is now revisiting its decision. join us to keep the momentum and hold our elected officials accountable!

(edit: just to clarify, you don’t HAVE to come and you can vote however you want. can’t believe I have to clarify that.)
